Gravitational Wave Emission by Cataclysmic Variables: numerical models of semi-detached binaries
Gravitational wave emission is considered to be the driving force for the evolution of shortperiod cataclysmic binary stars, making them a potential test for the validity of General Relativity. In spite of continuous refinements of the physical description, a 10% mismatch exists between the theoretical minimum period (Pturn ≃ 70 min) and the short-period cut-off (Pmin ≃ 80 min) observed in the ...
متن کاملCataclysmic variables as sources of gravitational waves
General relativity predicts that binary systems of stars produce gravitational waves of significant intensity. Here we are particularly interested in the cataclysmic variable binaries (CVs). These systems emit low frequency gravitational waves, f < 10−3Hz. We present here a catalog of CVs and argue that part of them are capable of being detected by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).
متن کاملExcess mid-IR Emission in Cataclysmic Variables
We present a search for excess mid-IR emission due to circumbinary material in the orbital plane of cataclysmic variables (CVs). Our motivation stems from the fact that the strong braking exerted by a circumbinary (CB) disc on the binary system could explain several puzzles in our current understanding of CV evolution. Since theoretical estimates predict that the emission from a CB disc can dom...
متن کاملDetection of Gravitational Wave Emission by Supermassive Black Hole Binaries Through Tidal Disruption Flares
Galaxy mergers produce supermassive black hole binaries, which emit gravitational waves prior to their coalescence. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to study the tidal disruption of stars by such a binary in the final centuries of its life. We find that the gas stream of the stellar debris moves chaotically in the binary potential and forms accretion disks around both black...
متن کاملQPOs in Cataclysmic Variables and in X-ray Binaries
Recent observations, reported by Warner and Woudt, of Dwarf Nova Oscillations (DNOs) exhibiting frequency drift, period doubling, and 1:2:3 harmonic structure, can be understood as disc oscillations that are excited by perturbations at the spin frequency of the white dwarf or of its equatorial layers. Similar quasi-periodic disc oscillations in black hole low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) transients...
